About Taekwondo

Originating in Korea, Taekwondo is a martial art with roots in traditional Korean fighting systems that developed into the modern discipline practised around the world today. Its name can be understood as the way of the foot and fist, reflecting its dynamic kicking techniques, powerful strikes and disciplined approach to training.

Over time, Taekwondo has evolved into a globally recognised competitive sport and became an official Olympic medal sport in 2000. Today, millions of children and adults practise Taekwondo for recreation, fitness, personal development and competition.

However, Taekwondo is not only a sport. Traditional Taekwondo continues to be widely practised as a martial art, with training that includes fundamental techniques, forms, self-defence, striking, movement and the values and discipline that have long been part of martial arts practice. At Delizo Martial Arts Academy, we believe students should experience both sides of Taekwondo. Our training combines traditional martial arts foundations with modern sport Taekwondo, giving students a well-rounded understanding while providing opportunities for those who wish to progress into Sparring or Poomsae competition.

Taekwondo also follows a structured belt-ranking system, giving students clear goals as they progress from beginner through increasingly advanced levels and ultimately towards black belt. Advancement is earned through consistent training, technical development, knowledge and commitment. For children in particular, this provides a powerful sense of achievement while teaching that meaningful progress takes patience, perseverance and effort.

Regular Taekwondo training can help develop strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and cardiovascular fitness, while encouraging discipline, focus, confidence, resilience and respect. Students learn to challenge themselves, respond positively to setbacks and recognise their own progress.

For children and adults alike, Taekwondo provides a journey that extends far beyond the training mat u2014 developing skills for martial arts while building qualities that can positively influence school, work, relationships and everyday life.
